How do I know if my floor stumps are sinking?

Do my stumps need replacing, or can they be fixed?

In most cases, the stumps themselves are structurally sound — the ground beneath them has moved. Restumping replaces the stumps, but the new ones sit on the same failed ground and can sink the same way. What causes floor stumps to sink?

Reactive clay soil is the single biggest cause. It swells when wet, shrinks when dry, and pulls away from the base of the stump.
